Schumer is not the first US official to call for new elections in Israel. In recent months, several other Democratic lawmakers have also made similar calls.
The Biden administration has not yet taken a position on the issue, but it is clear that there is growing pressure on Israel to hold new elections.
It remains to be seen whether Netanyahu will agree to hold new elections. He has previously said that he will not resign, and he has the support of a majority of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament.
